THE OLD TESTAMENT, or TANAKH (Genesis through Malachi) is God’s revelation to man from Creation to the 400 Silent Years before the birth of Christ. The Hebrew Bible is divided into the Torah containing the Five books of Moses, the Nevi’im containing the writings of the Prophets, and the Ketuvim containing the history books, Psalms, Proverbs, etc.
About 250 Years Before the birth of Christ, about 70 Jewish scholars in Alexandria Egypt translated the Hebrew Bible (TANAKH) into Greek. This Greek translation of the Old Testament was known as the LXX (70) or Septuagint. The order of the books in the Septuagint was the same as our current Old Testament. Meanwhile, the Masoretic text (Miqra) continues as the Hebrew Language Old Testament.

THE 400 SILENT YEARS. The Jews claim that God gave no new revelation of Scripture during this period. Although no new Scripture was given during this time, Prophetic Scripture was being fulfilled in minute detail in the history of the Jews. Many books were written during this time, some historical, some children’s stories. Some of these books were called the Apocrapha. Although these books were never considered Scripture by the Jews, they were often provided as supplemental reading.
